'Have You Heard The Birds Sing In The Night?' There is a sound like breathing in the night In the quiet street There is a sound like breathing in the night There is a sound like music in the night Where the trains meet There is a sound like music in the night And have you heard the cats call? I thought it was a baby crying Did you hear the caterwaul? They were singing in harmony They were having a street brawl They were ducking and diving And have you heard the birds sing in the night? There are people moving in the night While the city sleeps There are people moving in the night CHORUS There are emus and prairies round here But you can't see them for parked cars and traffic jams Then when the night comes down You can see it's a nice little turning CHORUS (©Rebecca Hollweg 1997)
2.
'Where Are You Going?' Where are you going when You run around, you run around baby? Slow down, take a look at life I'll have your babies and I'll be your wife Lie back, let me rub your back The sky is blue and it's a beautiful morning CHORUS I'm wild, I'm a tiny child Sometimes I feel I want to run away You're strong helping me along It all works better now you see me smiling CHORUS But you have given me a home in your heart Where the sun shines in and time is upside down And there's only the sky to keep us in And you have given me a home in your heart Where the stars can see me dancing To the light of the silvery moon, stop me asking (©Rebecca Hollweg 1996) credits

Long Lie 03:15
'Long Lie' Won't you wake up and have breakfast with me I've bought what I think is a pomelo and we could try some And now you like rye bread and watery tea I think you might just be perfect for me Come on, come out, come through, get out of bed Won't you wake up and talk to me I need some morning conversation And if you could only try to see I think you might just be perfect for me Come on, come out, come through, get out of bed Sleeping in, having a long lie Sleeping in, sleeping in Sleeping in, having a long lie You've been working all night and I know you need a long lie Won't you be quiet and not talk to me I need to find some concentration And if you could only let me be I think you might just be perfect for me Come on, come out, come through, get out of bed CHORUS Do you see me when I'm sleeping or are you always sleeping too? Did you hear me quietly weeping from the dream that I'd been through? Do you see me, do you hear me, even when I don't see you? Won't you wake up and have breakfast with me I need some morning conversation And now you can see the fool in me I think you might just be perfect for me Come on, come out, come through, get out of bed CHORUS You've been working all night and I know you need a long lie...in (©Rebecca Hollweg 1997)

'Is it Me You're Looking For?' I was the girl in the feather boa The little lady in the photograph You were the boy in the furry green coat and the matching cap Is it me you're looking for? I was the girl in the secondhand dress Drinking in the bar with the punks in You were the boy with the alcohol breath and the squeaky clean skin Is it me you're looking for? Somewhere in all the panic and confusion Somewhere there will be sweetness yet Out there, there must be water in the desert And like I said before Is it me you're looking for? She always seemed to be one of a pair Flare and a jacket in corduroy maroon He was the boy in the tartan over there With his own sgian dudh Is it me you're looking for? She was the girl in the velvet dress Cake frill collar and she wishes she's not there He was the boy with the lonely face And the long curling hair Is it me you're looking for? CHORUS I'm not the one who's lost It's just you haven't found me yet And I was careless of this precious little person And if I ask myself, I think it's time we met It's just a question of observation (repeat 1st verse) CHORUS (©Rebecca Hollweg 1997)
5.
Existential 03:40
'Existential' Shut the curtains now and close the houses' eyes I wonder how the time goes by inside How do people fill the minutes of their lives? I was running then and panicking See me stand my ground See me stand my ground Let the morning in and throw the windows wide It's good to feel that things are on your side Moving forwards on a gathering tide I am running now and travelling See me stand my ground See me stand my ground I will not be low etc. (repeat verses) CHORUS (©Rebecca Hollweg 1999)
6.
Somerset 04:09
'Somerset' The place I love has a happy name It sounds like childhood playing in the sun And mine was one such happy one The place I love is a powerful place That sometimes heals and sometimes lays you low A place that many people know Somerset I seemed to me the time was always summertime Somerset I seemed to me the time was always summertime And the sun would shine Life was better than the city Peacocks calling in the spring Valley's lying still and pretty Times when we grew everything People came and filled the house Lived from love to love and day to day And in the summer valleys we could hide away Oh don't you want to come and walk in the night with me And smell the sweetly flowering trees Oh don't you want to come and talk in the night with me And see the sky lit up with stars? Well the hippies left and life grew quieter Children who had seen it all And settled down in London town Became a singer and a writer And the happy times they come and go People die and children grow But it always stays the place you know thought the times may change
7.
'Mushroom Song' It's early in the morning Time when voices seem so loud It's early in the morning And all I want to do is lose the crowd You say you've all been up for hours You say you rose to meet the dawn You say you've all been picking mushrooms And left me with the daisies on the lawn And left me with the daisies on the lawn
8.
June Babies 03:14
'June Babies' You are a June baby I was a June baby too You are a strong lady And they say I am a strong lady too (If they only knew) You are a homemaker I am a homemaker too We've rarely been heartbreakers We've had our hearts broken for us me and you We're too tight and true CHORUS We're what you call girlfriends We're what you used to call best friends You are my good friend You are a risk taker I am a risk taker too You are a mover and shaker And now I'm getting a move on too I think we're breaking through CHORUS Little sea crabs running everywhere Going sideways but getting there Strong shelled but soft inside You gotta pick them up with love You are a June baby I was a June baby too You are a strong lady And they say I am a strong lady too (If they only knew) (repeat 3rd verse) CHORUS And everything's looking rosy (©Rebecca Hollweg 1997)
9.
Take Me Away 03:39
'Take Me Away' I am applying for a job that I already do I am relying on some luck to see me through I'm realising I'm not doing what I wanted to This situation isn't ringing true I know I'm lighting up this room I know I'm selling them this tune Sometimes they fall in love with me I know this isn't in my head Just from the things that they have said Take me away, take me away from here etc. This is my angry song I must allow myself to hope that I am getting near This treading water is the thing I fear If I leap far enough there's just a chance I'll make it clear I think I'll burn the boats that brought me here I want to eat a 10-course meal I want to dress the way I feel I wanna be the one who's dancing There's no more joy in this for me This isn't where I want to be CHORUS (©Rebecca Hollweg 1997)
10.
As a gale on a mountainside bends the oak tree Ancient old tree Cover me As a wave in an April tide moves a whole sea Just like the sea I am rocked by your love
11.
Sorry 02:44
'Sorry' You cannot see these bruises They are inside my head You cannot see these bruises They are from things you've said And things you haven't said There will be no excuses There are no reasons why There will be no excuses You will not even try Or seek to justify And the funny thing is I have forgiven you And the funny thing is That you will be my friend as far as you can And the funny thing is Now you're getting married CHORUS (repeat 1st verse) This is the place I threw the plate and drove away This is the place she took the kids and drove away She just drove away Lucky she could drive And the funny thing is I have forgiven you And the funny thing is that I have said farewell In every sense And the funny thing is Now you're getting married (©Rebecca Hollweg 1998)
12.
'Dancing In The Kitchen' When I think of you I think of dancing like a steam engine Like a piston engine just on one side And when I think of you I think of dancing with your hands flat With your palms down Off to each side Now I'm dancing in the kitchen with you Dancing in the kitchen with you Yes I'm dancing in the kitchen with you Dancing in the kitchen with you I think of you I think of pogo-ing around a little Jumping up and down a little Off to each side And when I think of you I think of riding on a roller coaster Spinning in a teacup on a fairground ride CHORUS I think of then I think of dancing on a hillside Dancing in a cow field on a starry night And when I think again I think of dancing with a stranger Dancing in a corner trying to get it right CHORUS I think of me I think of dancing on a Friday Lifting up my hip a little Just on one side And when I think of then I think of village halls and vodka and fishnet tights CHORUS In the kitchen, you'll find me dancing in the kitchen I'm mostly dancing in the kitchen In the daytime Dancing in the kitchen you'll find me dancing on the lino I'm mostly dancing in the kitchen To the radio CHORUS We're really cooking Now I'm dancing in the kitchen...to the radio (©Rebecca Hollweg 1998)
13.
Getting On 03:35
'Getting On' Sometimes I put things off It's not that I'm not trying Sometimes I talk a lot It's just to hide behind CHORUS It's just because I'm afraid Of getting on Sometimes I build things up It's not that I'm not trying If I'm not tough enough It's just a state of mind CHORUS How can I do this knowing nothing And carry on? How can I do this all for nothing And get along? (repeat verse1) (©Rebecca Hollweg 1998)

'Where Are You Going?' Where are you going when You run around, you run around baby? Slow down, take a look at life I'll have your babies and I'll be your wife Lie back, let me rub your back The sky is blue and it's a beautiful morning CHORUS I'm wild, I'm a tiny child Sometimes I feel I want to run away You're strong helping me along It all works better now you see me smiling CHORUS But you have given me a home in your heart Where the sun shines in and time is upside down And there's only the sky to keep us in And you have given me a home in your heart Where the stars can see me dancing To the light of the silvery moon, stop me asking (©Rebecca Hollweg 1996) credits

about

Rebecca’s limited edition original CD release ‘The Demos’, features the initial versions of songs featured on her two first albums.

Eight tracks are the recordings of the core band before additional or new guitar parts were recorded, string arrangements added etc. for their appearance on the albums 'June Babies' & 'Orange Roses'.

Six tracks are entirely different versions of these songs...
'Somerset', 'Mushroom Song', 'Rocked By Your Love', 'Getting On' & two alternative band versions of 'Where Are You Going'.

'Getting On' features a very exciting piano solo by Phil Peskett!
The 'Mushroom Song' is sung with Mark Johns on guitar, (later recorded with Phil's piano and Julian Ferraretto's strings for 'Orange Roses')
This version of 'Somerset' has a wordless intro/outro sung by Rebecca and soprano saxophone.
(On the 'Orange Roses' album, the very different version of 'Somerset' features Andy's first recording session on the chromatic harmonica!)

The band on 'The Demos' includes saxophonist Chris Bowden,
(Andy Hamill & Tom Gordon are the rhythm section on Chris's first two brilliant albums, 'Time Capsule' & 'Slightly Askew').
Chris plays soprano saxophone here on 'Somerset' and the original version of 'Where Are You Going?'.

Chris later wrote four beautiful string arrangements for the 'June Babies' album, including on 'Where Are You Going?', which there, is arranged for string quartet & Rebecca's voice.

(Rebecca's father Alexander Hollweg liked Chris's string quartet arrangement on 'Where Are You Going' so much that he adapted it for the brass band he played in).

The running order of 'The Demos' album is the set-list order from gigs at the 12-bar club in Denmark Street in Spring 1999.
